Lunar Calendar and Fishing
About Solunar Theory
What is Solunar Theory?
Developed by John Alden Knight in 1926, Solunar Theory explains how the positions of the moon and sun affect fish activity. The moon's gravitational pull affects tides as well as fish movements.
Moon Phases and Fish Activity
🌕 Full Moon: Highest activity! Fish tend to feed more actively.
🌑 New Moon: As effective as full moon! Poor visibility provides an advantage.
🌓🌗 Quarters: Medium level activity, still good results.
🌒🌘 Crescent: Low activity period, patience is rewarded.
Major and Minor Periods
There are 4 critical time periods each day:
🔴 Major Periods (2 times, 3 hours each)
When the moon is overhead and underfoot. Highest fish activity!
🔵 Minor Periods (2 times, 1.5 hours each)
Moonrise and moonset times. Medium level activity.
Best Fishing Tips
- •Choose full moon and new moon days.
- •Make sure to be at sea during major periods!
- •Sunrise and sunset times provide extra advantage.
- •Weekend + full moon combination is ideal!
- •Consider weather conditions as well.
